Akshay Kumar has been going through a rather rough patch at the box office as he hasn’t had a hit in a very long time. During a recent interview, when the actor was asked the reason as to why Indian cinema was facing a difficult time as the success ratio between the films being made, and those getting success, has been witnessing a dip, Akshay had a very simple explanation. The actor said that the introduction, and popularity of OTT platforms is the major cause behind films flopping at the box office.
Akshay shared with Pinkvilla, “I meet a lot of people and they often say that we will watch it on OTT so that is the biggest reason. That is what the whole thing is.” Akshay said that during the pandemic, people got used to watching content at home, and they still look forward to watching films at their convenience. He added, “Let’s not beat around the bush. Things have changed after that… after Covid, people got used to going on OTT platforms and watching things. It’s a habit that has been taken.”

In an earlier chat with Forbes India, Akshay Kumar shared similar sentiments and said, “The pandemic has undoubtedly changed the dynamics of the film industry. With audiences being more selective about their cinema outings, it has become crucial to choose projects that offer something completely entertaining and unique. I’ve become more mindful of the content, ensuring that it resonates with the current times and provides an experience that justifies a trip to the theatre. It’s about finding stories that not only entertain but also connect deeply with the audience.”
Akshay is presently promoting his upcoming film Sky Force. In 2024, he was seen in lead roles in Khel Khel Mein, Sarfira and Bade Miyan Chote Miyan but none of these movies worked at the box office. In 2023 too, he was seen in Selfiee and Mission Raniganj but both these films didn’t work at the box office. His movie OMG 2, led by Pankaj Tripathi, was a surprise hit at the box office.
Akshay Kumar is also looking forward to Jolly LLB 3, Bhooth Bangla, Housefull 5.
