Malayalam cinema also saw a great rise in its audience base, growing from 6.7 crore viewers in 2023 to 12.6 crore viewers in 2024—an 88 percent increase. Films like Manjummel Boys and Aavesham achieved success outside Kerala, boosting viewership.

However, according to data released by the Producers’ Association, Malayalam cinema alone suffered losses of ₹700 crores in the past year.
Bollywood’s downfall in 2024
For Bollywood, on the other hand, the year 2024 was a dismal one. According to the Ormax Box Office Report, which evaluates the profit and loss trends of films, Hindi cinema saw a 4 percent dip in its market share. Revenue dropped from ₹5,380 crores in 2023 to ₹4,679 crores in 2024.
Moreover, 31 percent of Bollywood’s revenue came from dubbed versions of South Indian films. If we consider only the films originally released in Hindi, the box office decline for Bollywood would stand at 37 percent.
South Indian languages like Telugu (20%), Tamil (15%) and Kannada (3%) together accounted for 48 percent of the Indian box office share. In contrast, Bollywood’s share stood at just 40 percent, a major drop for an industry that once dominated Indian cinema.
Hollywood films claimed an 8 percent share of the box office.
The Indian film industry grossed ₹11,838 crores at the box office in 2024, a 3% decrease compared to ₹12,226 crores in 2023.
